For all those suffering from Age of Conan fever, I have news. The problem is, this news is exciting and will only make you want to play sooner.
Game Director, Gaute Godager has released his first of many letters directed towards us on the Age of Conan website. Godager runs through the features of the game and says, “We approached the making of this game with brutality.”
Godager branches on his feelings towards the typical MMO agreeing that although they are great and fun to play he wanted to do something different.
“For me personally I think it started by getting a slight fatigue with doing the same thing in every MMO. Harvesting quests, hitting 1,2,3,4 as I watched my hot bar icons during fights, falling asleep as I was grinding my in-game dinner,” he said.
First plan of action was to rid AoC of the standard battling system.
“Out with the watch-the-hotkey-bar combat. Nothing wrong with it, except we wanted more location, direction, distance and hands on player skill to matter,” he explained. AoC will use a multi-direction hit system inspired by many fighting games. The combat system they wanted had to be based on skill and most importantly FUN.
“I’m happy to say, we are finally close to this,” he said.
His team also wanted to make quests more then just an experience aid.
“We wanted to present fewer, but better written, quests with more meaning,” he said.
AoC questing will offer multiple-choice dialogue and voices, finally an NPC telling me what the quest is instead of me having to read it.
Thirdly, and this news caused a shiver of relief for myself, AoC will make crafting more of a quest experience instead of a grinding one.
“I know. Many hundred quests to create, but what the heck, to make crafting a story, a journey and not work, it is worth it,” explains Godager.
Spell casting was an area of focus as well. Godager wanted Spell casting to be a tactical experience allowing the healer to be more involved with the team instead of standing in the background watching the health bars.
Ah yes, and the birth of a new type of server, RPVP (Role Playing Player versus Player). Godager knows PVP needed to be an important aspect of the game, because in AoC, “killing your friends is never out of character,” he said.
Finally, we come to what I refer to as one of the best things any MMO could do, implement an apprenticeship system. This system will allow you to play with those friends who are higher levels and have way more time on their hands then you do.
“Becoming an apprentice will let you access some of their level content, allowing you to at least have a minor role in their teams,” Godager said.
AoC is still months away but Godager and his team seemed to be focusing on presenting you with a new way of enjoying online games. Now we can only sit back and wait to hear more about this exciting expansion to MMO history.
